Lazarus Ros. (Birth May 11, 1925 Havana), At age 13 he began singing at the festivities of saints and was constantly traveling to Matanzas, where the most respected temples began to identify the voice of whom he has transcended as the biggest akpwon (singer) of lucum í music and arara in Cuba. Ten years later he integrated the collective that took, for the first time, an Afrocuban show to theatre, in the Covarrubias Room of the National Theatre. He is one of the founders of the National Folkloric Set (CFN), an institution with which he has traveled the world. Prestigious Cuban researchers like Algeria Le ónn, Miguel Barnet, Isaac Barreal, Alberto Pedro and Rogelio Martinez Furé drank from their unfailing knowledge. He worked with the Cuban National Ballet and the Symphony Orchestra of Matanzas as well as the film Maria Antonia. He is the author of the plays for theatre: The Alafin of Hearing and Arar ará. On his numerous international tours he recorded folk music for radio and television in Belgium, Algeria and Spain, for the Chant du Monde record collection in France and BBC London. Without a doubt, his most transcendent work is the collection of albums on Yorubas chants Orisha Ayé. Singing as bass or reaching out to the most raucous acute, his powerful and beautiful voice, of a very wide record allowed him to perform alongside important figures of both lyrical music and more contemporary music. With Cuban Suite of choreographer Ramiro Guerra debuted in cinema, also participated in Osain and other shorts and documentaries with the theme of African background and Cuban santeria, including The Messenger of the Gods, Iroko, Shang ó and Jicotea and Ogun. Ocha Niwe, who was his ritual name, was the most famous of the Cuban Akpwones, who managed to become a professional of singing and folk dance without departing at any point in his religious worship, where he learned and developed his capacity and talent as a singer : The Ocha Rule. True to his open mindset, when Carlos Alfonso and Pablo Menendez invited him to share his chants and insert them into the rock orbit, Lazarus not only lent himself gladly, but gave himself fully to that new aesthetic experience with the groups Synthesis and Mix. Death
He died on February 8, 2005 in Havana City at age 80, a victim of cancer. He will always be remembered for the merits achieved in his extensive work as apwon of the rich and ancestral Afrocuban folklore, professor of several generations, for his high capacity achieved in years of study and overcoming. His singing was projected into the universe with the potential of Oggun and the lyricism of softness of Ochun, to show humanity the survival of five hundred years in chants and prayers, all born in the most intricate bowels of his race, full of echoes and regrets.
