Viriato Beach is situated west of the city of Havana very close to the current Club Havana. Viriato Gutierrez Vallad ónn was Secretary of the presidency during the government of Gerardo Machado. The wealthy Cuban millionaire Viriato Gutierrez Vallad ónn ordered to build a summer mansion on the coast of the Flores estate. And at the fall of Machado in 1933, the people took possession of the beach and went public. Later, they wanted to privatize it again but the neighbors filed a lawsuit to avoid it. Litigation spread a bit but eventually they won it and in 1941 the beach was declared a public good. In 1965 the buildings surrounding the beach were delivered to the newly created Cuban Academy of Sciences to install the Institute of Oceanology there. That’s how Viriato beach stopped being public again. The beach was built by refilling certain parts of the coast and making a concrete wall aimed at retaining the filling. They also made another crossing wall, through water across the other side of the small beach cove, with the purpose of retaining a possible leak of sand to the sea. They added two tiny spikes to him and, at the end of one of them, built a kind of small medieval fortress to which the neighbors told the castle. The inner maritime area next to the two tiny spikes was dredged so they could get there small yachts. ·
